A tragic incident has overshadowed the Cork City Marathon as a young female participant in the half-marathon has sadly passed away. The runner collapsed near the finish line on Patrick’s Street, where emergency services rushed to her aid. Despite immediate medical attention, she could not be saved.
The event, which included a full marathon, half-marathon, and 10k race, saw widespread road closures across Cork to accommodate thousands of participants. The half-marathon began at 10:15am from Monahan Road, just hours after the full marathon started.
Cork City Council expressed deep sorrow following the incident, extending heartfelt condolences to the woman’s family and friends. The identity of the runner has not yet been made public.
