A jury has been officially sworn in for the trial of Richard Satchwell, accused of murdering his wife, Tina Satchwell, eight years ago. Seven women and five men have been chosen to hear the case, which begins tomorrow and is expected to continue for six weeks.

Richard Satchwell, 57, of Grattan Street in Youghal, Co Cork, denies the charge of murdering his 45-year-old wife, who was reported missing in March 2017. Tina Satchwell, originally from St Bernard’s Place in Fermoy, vanished under mysterious circumstances. After a lengthy investigation, Gardaí uncovered her skeletal remains in October 2023 beneath a concrete floor under a stairwell at their home.

Before the jury was finalised, Mr Justice Kerida Naidoo addressed potential jurors, stressing that prior media coverage should not influence their judgment. He acknowledged the reporting on the case was normal but emphasised the importance of impartiality. Jurors were instructed to disclose any familiarity with the accused, the deceased, or any witnesses that could affect their objectivity.

The trial is expected to hear testimony from about 100 witnesses. With years of unanswered questions and a shocking discovery, the case is set to attract significant public and media attention.
