Heartbreaking tributes have been shared for Ellen Cassidy, the 24-year-old athlete who tragically passed away after completing the Cork Half Marathon. Ellen became unwell at the finish line shortly after 1pm and, despite swift medical intervention and hospital care, she sadly passed away at Cork University Hospital.
Ellen wasn’t just a runner—she was a shining light in Irish swimming. A dedicated member of Dolphin Swimming Club since the age of nine, Ellen’s presence left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She swam with strength, grace, and a radiant smile that uplifted her teammates.
Representing Ireland on the international stage—including at the European Youth Olympics and Junior Championships—Ellen made her club, her city, and her country proud. She was more than an athlete; she was a mentor, a friend, and a beacon of positivity.
Her club remembered her as a role model whose passion and kindness shaped the lives of young swimmers. “Your smile and your drive will never be forgotten,” they said.
Ellen’s death has cast a shadow over what should have been a day of celebration. Our hearts go out to her family, friends, and the entire sporting community as they grieve this immeasurable loss.
