Tomás Markey, a sixth-year student at St. Brogan’s College, Bandon, won Best Individual at the 61st BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition for his innovative project, “PM-DAC: A System for Removing CO2 from the Atmosphere.”

His Passive & Modular Direct Air Capture framework offers a cost-effective way to tackle climate change through scalable carbon capture technology. Judges praised Tomás for his prototype’s impressive design and groundbreaking approach to reducing atmospheric CO2.
Anaus Syed Muhammad of Bruce College, Cork, was honoured with the 2025 Irish Aid/Self Help Africa Science for Development Award for his project, “HemaSense: Screens for Anemia, Blood Conditions Without Needle Sticks.” Using smartphone cameras, Anaus developed a noninvasive method to screen haemoglobin, aiming to simplify blood condition detection globally. # Advertisment
Minister Sean Fleming commended the project’s potential to improve lives, noting that Anaus will travel to the Gambia with Self Help Africa to test his project in real-world settings. The Science for Development Award recognizes practical solutions for challenges in low-income countries.
