Jennifer Thomas, 46, of Oakfield View, Glanmire, has been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to causing the death of her friend, Sheila Dunne, by dangerous driving. The fatal crash occurred on February 11, near Dunne’s home in Glanmire. Dunne, a 50-year-old mother of two, succumbed to her injuries two days later.

The Cork Circuit Criminal Court heard that Thomas consumed 12 alcoholic drinks on the day of the crash. Initially, she falsely claimed that Dunne had been driving but later admitted she was behind the wheel. Judge Helen Boyle condemned Thomas’s actions, stating they demonstrated “reckless disregard for human life.”

The sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of drunk driving. The court acknowledged the profound impact on Dunne’s family and community, describing her death as a tragic and avoidable loss.
