Leaving Cert Agricultural Science Subject Content The course consists of the study of a variety of aspects of agriculture under the following headings:

  • Soils
  • The general structure and function of plants
  • Farm crops – cereal and roots
  • Farm crops – grassland
  • Trees and shelter
  • Structure and function of the animal body
  • The cow, the sheep, horse, and pig
  • Farm buildings (for school assessment only)
  • Farm-house environment (for school assessment only)
  • The Programme covers the following topics:Strand 1: Scientific Practices – Hypothesising and experimenting, evaluating evidence, and communicating, working safety.Strand 2: Soils – Soil formation and classification, physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of soil.Strand 3: Crops – Crop production, grassland management, plant physiology and applied plant genetics.Strand 4: Animals – Animal production systems (beef, dairy, sheep, and pig production enterprises), animal physiology and applied animal genetics, markets for Irish production, environmental impact of Irish agriculture.

These classes are taught by Mr James Dullea at our rooms in the Wilton SMA Hall.  Class run weekly on Fridays from 7:30-9:00pm.

The annual fee for the course is €720, with payment due in 2 installments (Term 1 and Term 2) prior to the commencement of each course term.

Term 1 classes run from September-December, Term 2 classes run from January-June.
