Nearly two years after Deepa Dinamani’s tragic death, her family continues to grapple with profound grief. Deepa, aged 38, was murdered by her husband, Regin Rajan, at their home in Wilton, Cork, just four months after they relocated from India in March 2023. The couple, who moved with their young son, appeared to be starting a new chapter, with Deepa taking a senior role in a global finance firm. However, beneath the surface, their marriage was deteriorating. Deepa sought a divorce, which Rajan refused to accept.
On 14 July 2023, Rajan called emergency services and confessed to the killing. Gardaí found Deepa’s body in their bedroom, wrapped in a duvet, fatally stabbed with a knife Rajan had purchased days earlier. He later told the court it was a tragic accident, a claim the jury rejected unanimously.
At the sentencing, Deepa’s brother Ullas described her as his closest companion and expressed the enduring pain her death caused. He spoke of their parents’ ongoing heartbreak and the devastating impact on Deepa’s son, who still struggles with the loss. The court sentenced Rajan to life imprisonment, with the judge condemning his testimony as deceitful and the attack as premeditated and inexcusable.
