Community facilities set to crumble without Sports Capital Grant

Community facilities set to crumble without Sports Capital Grant
Statement 4th Feb 2009
Speaking in the Seanad on the Adjournment Debate Fine Gael Cork Senator, Jerry Buttimer, questioned whether or not an alternative funding mechanism is to be put in place for sporting clubs now that the Sports Capital Grant for 2009 has been withdrawn. Senator Buttimer also questioned where funds from National Lottery ticket sales will go now that the Grant has been suspended.

"Government confirmation that the Sports Capital Grant for 2009 has been withdrawn will have serious repercussions for numerous sporting facilities in Cork who are now in limbo not knowing where to turn for financial support.

"Douglas Swimming Pool, which is in dire need of refurbishment, has repeatedly been promised funding which has not been forthcoming and which it is now unlikely to receive.

"Question also arise as to where the National Lottery funding will now go. National Lottery funds are made up of proceeds from ticket sales which are paid for by the Irish people for the benefit of sporting, as well as other, organisations. If these funds are not now being apportioned to sporting organisations, the Minister for Finance, at whose discretion funding is allocated, must clearly identify the recipients who will now benefit.

"It is essential that funding is allocated to sporting and community organisations as their contribution to society, and to the building of sustainable communities, cannot be underestimated. Furthermore the development of local facilities could help kick-start local economies by providing much needed jobs during these increasingly difficult times.

"Is it the Government's intention that the purpose of the National Lottery is be redefined? The Minister must now comprehensively outline who, if not sporting organisations, will benefit from National Lottery funds in 2009?"
